Teen in serious condition after attack

MANATEE -- A 13-year-old from North Port was seriously injured in a beating about 8:30 p.m. Friday on the north side of DeSoto Junction, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
The teen rode up from North Port with a 15-year-old and his mother to go shopping at DeSoto Square mall. The boys went their separate ways at the mall and met with another teen, about 16, who they knew when he lived in North Port, the report said.
The boys from North Port left the mall with the 16-year-old, two other unknown males and two unknown females.
The group was walking eastbound in between DeSoto Junction and Mira Lagos when they stopped. The two North Port boys were sitting on a drainage ditch cover when, for an undetermined reason, the 16-year-old suspect walked up behind the 13-year-old and hit him on the back of the head with a stick. The 16-year-old then hit the second North Port teen in the face. The second teen ran for help, the report said.
When the second teen returned to the scene of the attack, the 13-year-old was on the ground, attended by the two girls, who were not involved in the attack. The suspects were gone. The girls called 911. EMS responded and the 13-year-old was flown by Bay Flight to Bayfront Hospital.
